Savannakhet Province

Savannakhet has a mixture of historical, pre-historical, ancient cultural, Buddhist and natural interests for travelers. It is located between Khammouane to the north and Saravane to the south, and borders with Vietnam on the east and Thailand on the west.

Khanthabouly, the provincial capital of Savannakhet is a busy market place with various traders from Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. The town can be reached by Mekong river ferry from Thailand's Mukdahan. Visitors can see French colonial style buildings in the town.

That Ing Hang in Khanthabouly district ( 14 km to the east of town ) is a most famous stupa. Built by the King Sikhotabong, That Ing Hang is the holiest edifice in southern Laos. It houses a hollow chamber with distinguished collections of Buddha images.

Dinosaur fossils have been found in Muang Phin district on the way from Khanthabouly to Ban Thao ( a border check point with Vietnam ). They were discovered by French scientists and local people in 1930s.

Heuane Hin or Stone House built in Khmer architectural design hundreds of years ago is one of the tourist spot in the province.

Ho Chi Minh Trails. In Xepon district ( 170 km east of Khanthabouly ) tourists can visit what is left on the historically famous Ho Chi Minh trails. North to south along the trails, remains of downed US helicopters, fighter planes and various other war machines could be seen. If time permits, travelers can trace along the Ho Chi Minh trails to the south into Vietnam.

That Phon stpua is one of the most significant temples, and was built during the years 560 to 700 AD. Festive rite is annually organized on the full moon day of the first lunar calendar month to pay respect to Phra Shiva and other Lords of Hinduism.

Travelling to and from Savannakhet
Visitors can drive from Vientiane to Khanthabouly.  There is a road to the southern provinces of Saravane, Sekong, Champassack and Attapeu also. Travel by boat on Mekong river is possible. There are domestic air links with Vientiane and Champassack.

Tourists holding visa can enter the province from Thailand ( Mukdahan ) and Vietnam ( Kao Theo ). From Thailand's Mukdahan town travelers can cross Mekong river by boat to come to Khanthabouly. From Vietnam's Kao Theo visitors can walk into Ban Thao village in Lao side.
